NetGreen Quality Guidelines
NetGreen takes its responsibility seriously to offer quality carbon offsets. NetGreen staff are professionals who have worked nearly ten years in the field of greenhouse gas emissions, and have experience evaluating project quality based on internationally accepted standards.
Our project evaluation criteria are as follows:
- Recommendation by Independent Review: Projects which are offered by as carbon offsets by NetGreen have been reviewed by independent studies in the field and recommended by professionals with decades of experience in the industry. NetGreen reviews current studies periodically to update our recommendations and product offerings.
- Additionality: A key criteria in project evaluations Is the criteria of additionality. There are offsets being sold which do not follow this criteria rigorously. Additionality ensures that a project will not happen without the financial assistance of the carbon offsets. This ensures that the money spent on offsets by NetGreen customers make a difference in reducing or preventing greenhouse gas emissions. This is usually determined by evaluating these criteria:
- Financial Barriers: Where there are significant financial barriers to a project happening in a “business as usual” scenario, the project can be determined to satisfy the criteria of additionality.
- Absence or Exceeding of Regulatory Requirements: The project cannot be required by government regulation. Where regulatory requirements are either absent, or the project exceeds regulatory requirements, the criteria of additionality is present.
- Other Barriers to Implementation: Where there are other significant barriers to project implementation, the project can meet the criteria of additionality.
- Baseline and Benefit Quantification: A credible project manager will determine the baseline emissions, the emissions which would have occurred without the project. At that point, the project manager can also quantify the benefits which result in greenhouse gas emissions reductions or sequestration which occur as a result of the project.
- Permanence: NetGreen gives preference to projects which demonstrate permanence, for which offsets would not be subject to potential reversal. For that reason, forest projects are a small percentage of the projects that we fund, since a forest fire or pest infestation will result in reversal.
- Avoiding double-counting: NetGreen offsets are registered in an internal auditable system which avoid double-counting. Offsets are retired to maximize environmental benefit.
- Monitoring and Verification: The offset projects will be monitored and verified by project experts.
- Industry voluntary standards: Currently, NetGreen wind project offsets or offset methodologies follow one of the accepted standards, the Climate Neutral Network, Voluntary Carbon Standard or the Voluntary Gold Standard.
